Description
Rangers are a chain wearing melee fighter focused primarily on offensive capabilities. Rangers gain some healing, offensive, and utility spells, and can be considered a hybrid of Druid and Warrior.
Stengths/Weaknesses
Pros
- Good damage, especially with bows and appropriate AA
- Capable of tanking in small group situations
- Dual Wield, Double Attack and relatively high weapon skill caps
- Group and self-only attack buffs
- Utility spells such as SoW/SoE, invis and levitate
- Harmony for outdoor pacify
- Snare and root spells
Cons
- Does not truly come into their own until max level with a good bow and AAs
- Not as effective when forced into melee range
Grouping
Rangers are most commonly paired with a priest class, and will benefit greatly from their heals and buffs. In a larger group their primary role is dealing damage. While leveling they will primarily melee but later on (and with the right equipment and AAs) they will switch to archery as their preferred style of attack. With the right equipment, rangers can effectively tank for a small group. However, they cannot wear most plate armor and their defensive skills caps are significantly lower than classes such as Warriors, Paladins and Shadow Knights. In outdoor zones, Rangers can make effective pullers when using Harmony.
Raiding
Rangers primary role in a raid setting is dealing damage. The availability of high-end bows and Archery AAs put them on-par with other melee classes in their damage output, and their ability to stay out of AOE range helps them to stay alive. Call of the Predator is an excellent attack buff which is unique to the class and always appreciated in a raid. They may occasionally be tasked with pulling raid targets in combination with their Weapon Shield Discipline.
